Drawing materials and equipment needed to start:
- Charcoal for drawing, Nitram is a good brand.
- Plumb line (tie a fishing weight or small key to a 3' long piece of black thread.)
- Handheld mirror, rectangular, approximately 5 x 7 inches
- 24" by 36" drawing board, 1/4"masonite, no handles.
- Canson charcoal paper.
- Kneaded eraser.
- Masking tape.
- Blending stubs.
- Easel, must hold drawing board vertically (more information available at atelier).
- Sandpaper block (information available at atelier).
Additional equiptment needed for grisaille cast painting:
- A large wooden palette.
- Palette knife, elongated diamond shape.
- Palette cups that attach to the palette, without lids.
- Mahl stick, a 3 foot long piece of 3/8 inch dowel will do.
- Rags.
- Small empty glass jars with lids.
- Bristle brushes, rounds, at least two of each of the following sizes: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Robert Simmons is a good economical brand for starters.
Materials needed for grisaille cast painting:
- Odorless mineral spirits, from a hardware or paint store.
- Turpentine, rectified, from an art supply store.
- Dammar varnish crystals, from Kremer Pigments or Daniel Smith.
- One large tube of Flake White oil paint, Winsor Newton brand is best.
- One regular sized tube each of Ivory Black and Raw Umber oil paint, Winsor Newton, Sennelier, Grumbacher Pre-tested, or Schminke brands.
- Good quality Stand Oil.
- Good quality oil gesso.
Additional colors needed for still life painting:
- Burnt Umber
- Burnt Sienna
- Indian Red
- Alizarine Crimson
- Naples Yellow
- Yellow Ochre
- Viridian
- Sap Green
- Ultramarine Blue
